The Museum für Photographie exhibits contemporary photography as well as important movements from the second half of the 20th century. Besides exhibitions, the museum produces catalogues, lectures, workshops and tours.

The museum collection was built up around the oeuvres of two photographers from Braunschweig: Hans Steffens (1915-1994) and Käthe Buchler (1876-1930). Steffens pointed his lens mainly to subjects in and around Braunschweig right after the Second World War, while Buchler chose a wide variety of subjects, as demonstrated by her autochromes, glass (dia-)positives and silver gelatin prints.

The museum also fosters a collection of early photographical procedures by well-known photographers like Hill & Adamson, Felix Nadar and Julia Margaret Cameron, a.o. This collection is complemented by a selection of contemporary (digital) prints, ranging from the 1980’s until today, by artists from Braunscwheig. The museum offers student internships.
