Dana Lixenberg (1964) woont en werkt in New York en Amsterdam. Ze studeerde fotografie aan de London College of Printing (1984–1986) en aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (1987–1989). In 1993 maakte ze een portretserie over ‘gangs’ in Watts, Los Angeles, gepubliceerd in Vibe. Al snel volgden opdrachten van uiteenlopende magazines als de New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Newsweek en Vrij Nederland. Met de meeste van die tijdschriften heeft ze een lange-termijn verbintenis tot op de dag van vandaag. Tegelijkertijd onderneemt ze ook lange-termijn projecten vanuit een persoonlijke motivatie, meestal gericht op individuen en gemeenschappen in de marge van de samenleving. In 2001 publiceerde ze haar eerste boek United States in samenwerking met de Kunsthal in Rotterdam. Andere solo-tentoonstellingen zijn The Last Days of Shishmaref (Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam in 2008) en Jeffersonville, Indiana (De Hallen, Haarlem in 2005). Een recent project is Set Amsterdam, een verstilde serie interieurs en ontvolkte stadsgezichten (Foam, 2011). Voor Document Nederland, de jaarlijkse documentaire fotografieopdracht van Rijksmuseum en NRC Handelsblad, reisde Dana Lixenberg in 2011 maandenlang door Nederland om het ambt van burgemeester vast te leggen.
Dana Lixenberg (born in 1964) lives and works in New York and Amsterdam. In 1993 she initiatied a series of portraits at the Imperial Courts Housing Project in Watts, Los Angeles, published in Vibe. She soon received commissions from a wide variety of magazines such as the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Newsweek, and Vrij Nederland, among many others. Many of these collaborations continue to this date. All the while, Lixenberg continues working on long-term personal projects, mostly focused on individuals and communities on the margins of society. Recent projects include a followup to the Imperial Courts series of 1993, which will culminate in a book and exhibition, and a portrait of life in Amsterdam (Set Amsterdam) composed solely of unpopulated still lifes, interiors and exteriors. In 2001, her first book, United States, was published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Kunsthal, Rotterdam. Other solo museum exhibitions include The Last Days of Shishmaref at the Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam in 2008 and Jeffersonville, Indiana, De Hallen, Haarlem, the Netherlands in 2005. Furthermore Dana Lixenberg travelled the length and breath of the Netherlands for a few months to compile a photographic report on the everyday office of mayor for Document Nederland, the annual documentary photographic project organised by the Rijksmuseum and NRC Handelsblad.
