Drik Gallery was one of the first and is still one of the few South Asian galleries showing contemporary documentary photography. The Drik ('Vision' in Sanskrit) photography agency was founded by photojournalist
Shahidul Alam in 1989.
Because no exhibition space in Bangladesh was willing to put 'political' work on display, the Drik agency opened its own gallery in 1993. Since then, the gallery has organised solo and group exhibitions of photography, painting, sculpture and cartoons. Most work on display is documentary photography of South Asian origin, but the work of international icons like Sebastião Salgado and Martin Parr have also been shown here.
Extra information: Open daily from 15:00-20:00 hrs
Drik continues to follow its mission as an independent gallery showing sensitive work. This was proven again in March 2010, when the gallery was cordoned off by the police to sabotage the showing of the exhibition
'Crossfire'.
