The Nederlands Fotomuseum has a big collection of negatives, slides and prints of 70 Dutch Photographers. Their work gives a wide impression of Dutch and sometimes foreign societies. 129 archives are being stored in specially climatized depots of the museum among which the collections of Ed van der Elsken and Cas Oorthuys. The Nederlands Fotomuseum aims to be the national center of knowledge of photography. It started in 2003 by combining the Nederlands Foto Instituut, the Nederlands Fotoarchief and the Nationaal Fotorestauratie Atelier. For the museum, photography is a medium with both a social and artistic function. Contemporary and historical, professional and amateur photography are all part of its interest. Its collection comprises a big part of the sum total of Dutch photography.

The museum shows photography exhibitions and hosts the Fotoprijs.

Extra information
Since 19 April 2007, the Nederlands Fotomuseum is located at the Wilhelminakade in the former workshop building of the Company Holland America. This building is now known as Las Palmas.

The NFM has a good library on photography.

History in NFM
In 2003, The Nederlands Fotomuseum became fact. Almost ten years after the Nederlands Foto Instituut (NFI), the Nederlands Fotoarchief and the Nederlands Fotorestauratie Atelier settled in the Witte de Withstraat in Rotterdam, they joined together under a new name: the Nederlands Fotomuseum.
The museum focused on photography in the broadest sense of the word. The museum was situated in the Witte de Withstraat in Rotterdam before moving in april 2007 to its permanent residence, Las Palmas in the southern part of Rotterdam, called Kop van Zuid.
On the advice of the Wertheimer Fund, the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds (important Dutch fund) has decided to spend the financial results of the Wertheimer Legaat on the activities of the Nederlands Fotomuseum for a period of 3 years.

Although the museum doesn’t yet fit the profile preferred by the Wertheimer Fund / Het Wertheimerfonds, this decision was made because of a great belief it soon will. The museum staff has proven to be of professional quality and the 3 organizations (Nederlands Foto Instituut, het Nederlands Fotoarchief en het Nationaal Fotorestauratie Atelier) have been running well in the past years.
Wertheimer Fund should be spent on the ‘promotion of the Dutch photography in general and for the support of, or formation and continuation of a Dutch Photomuseum.’ In this museum both professional and amateur photography should be supported. Wertheimer Fund was formed when Mr. Hein Wertheimer died. It was his wish to spend his legacy of about 10 million euros on the promotion of Dutch photography.
