W. EUGENE SMITH MEMORIAL FUND
The
W. Eugene Smith Fund awards the annual $20.000
Gene Smith-grant for the production of a proposed humanistic photo-documentary project by a photographer that
'…follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith's concerned photography and dedicated compassion…'.
The Smith Fund was founded in 1979, a year after the death of photographer W. Eugene Smith (1918-'78). Smith was a pioneer in the field of documentary photography and the photographic essay.
Since 1996 the Smith Fund added the annual $5000
'Howard Chapnick Grant', 'to encourage and support leadership in fields ancillary to photojournalism, such as editing research, education and management'.
