Fred Ritchin is docent Fotografie aan New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Hij was beeldredacteur van New York Times Magazine (1978-82), uitvoerend redacteur van Camera Arts Magazine (1982-83), oprichter en directeur van het Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Program in het International Center of Photography (1983-86).
Ritchin is de schrijver van After Photography (binnenkort gepubliceerd in paperback en vertaald in Chinees, Frans, Koreaans en Spaans) en In Our Image: The Coming Revolution in Photography. Zijn essays zijn verschenen in boeken als In Our Time, The world As Seen By Magnum Photographers, An Uncertain Grace: The Photographs of Febastiao Salgado, Mexico Through Foreign Eyes: Photographs, 1850-1990, Sahel: End of the Road en Under Fire: Great Photographers and Writers in Vietnam. Hij is op dit moment bezig een boek te schrijven, Outside the Fram, over fotografie en mensenrechten, en schrijft regelmatig op het blog afterphotography.com. Ritchin was onlangs curator van het New York Photo Festval, 2010.
