Joachim Schmid (1955) heeft zich met zijn werk altijd verzet tegen de traditionele opvatting van kunstfotografie. Hij proclameert met verve de kracht en schoonheid van alledaagse gebruiksfotografie, of het nu gevonden wordt op straat of op het internet. Hij begon zijn carriére aan het begin van de jaren ’80 als een freelance criticus voor zijn zelf uitgegeven blad Fotokritik. Hierin fulmineert hij tegen de gevestigde orde in de fotografie en pleit voor een allesomvattende kijk op fotografie. Na het ter ziele gaan van het tijdschrift begon Schmid zich meer te richten op eigen projecten, zoals Bilder von der Strasse (‘Beelden van de straat’), die hij begin jaren ’80 opstartte en tot op de dag van vandaag wordt aangevuld.
Schmid heeft vele internationale tentoonstellingen op zijn naam staan. Zijn werk zit in de collecties van o.a. Folkwang Museum (Essen) het Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), het Nederlands Fotomuseum (Rotterdam), het San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, het Maison Europenne de la Photographie (Parijs) en de Daelim Contemporary Art Museum (Seoul). Zijn werk is in vele publicaties en catalogi opgenomen, maar Schmid heeft vooral vele boekproducties in eigen beheer (kunstenaarsboeken) uitgegeven, zeker vanaf het moment dat hij ABC Artists' Books Cooperative oprichtte, bestaande uit een steeds uitdijend netwerk van kunstenaars die zich toeleggen op print-on-demand uitgaves.

Joachim Schmid (born in 1955) is a Berlin-based artist who has been working with found photographs since the early 1980s. Schmid has always challenged the traditional and prevailing idea of ‘art photography‘. Instead, he has championed the importance of photographs that are produced and seen everyday; ranging from passport photos, to high street studio portraits, ID cards and, more recently, the Internet. Joachim Schmid began his career in the early 1980’s as a freelance critic and the publisher of Fotokritik. In the pages of Fotokritik Schmid argued articulately against prevailing, predominantly conservative notions of fine art photography and in favor of a broad, encompassing critique of photography as a form of cultural practice. After ceasing publication of Fotokritik in 1987, Schmid focused on his own art production, based primarily on found photography and public image sources. He started one project, Pictures from the Street, (Bilder von der Straße, in German), in the early 1980s and it still continues today. Schmid has exhibited internationally since the late 1980s in many countries. His work is included in major museum collections including the Folkwang Museum, Essen, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Nederland's Fotomuseum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Maison Europenne de la Photographie, Paris, the Daelim Contemporary Art Museum, Seoul, and more. In 2007 Photoworks and Steidl published a comprehensive monograph, Joachim Schmid Photoworks 1982–2007 on the occasion of his first retrospective exhibition. His work has been documented in a number exhibition-specific catalogues and artist's books over the course of his career, especially since he founded in 2009 ABC Artists' Books Cooperative, an constantly expanding international network of artists who make print-on-demand books.
